The short version

Everything you put into The Jelly Bean Jar app - names, your wedding date, your entries, your notes - is stored on your own phone and never sent to us. We cannot read it, we have no copy of it, and we could not recover it for you if you lost it.

The only thing that reaches our servers is the activation code from your card, so we can confirm it is valid. That is the whole exchange.

This policy explains what The Marriage Gazette LLC ("we", "us") does with information in connection with The Jelly Bean Jar, the companion web app at thejellybeanjar.com, and the printed editions we sell.

1. What the app stores on your device

The app keeps its data in your browser's local storage, on the device you are using. This includes:

None of this is transmitted to us. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server-side copy. The app has no ability to sync between devices, by design.

This has a consequence worth stating plainly: if you clear your browser data, uninstall the app, lose the device, or switch phones without making a backup first, that information is gone permanently. We cannot restore it, because we never had it.

2. What we receive when you activate

When you scan the code on your activation card, the app sends three things to our validation service so we can confirm your card is genuine:

That identifier is a random value produced by the app itself. It is not your device's serial number, advertising ID, phone number, or any identifier assigned by your phone or your carrier, and it is not linked to your name or to anything you later enter in the app.

We keep a count of how many activations each print run has produced. We do not build a profile from these requests, and nothing you log in the app is attached to them.

3. What we do not collect

4. Backups you create

The app can export your data as a file you download or as a block of text you copy. Both are produced entirely on your device and go wherever you choose to put them. Nothing is uploaded to us in the process.

One thing to understand about the text format: it is encoded, not encrypted. Anyone who obtains that text can decode and read it with ordinary tools. Treat a backup the way you would treat the contents of the jar itself, and think before emailing one to yourself on a shared account or pasting it somewhere public.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

We do not use advertising or analytics cookies. The app uses your browser's local storage to hold your data and your activation status, which is what lets the app work offline and remember where you left off. Clearing your browser's site data for thejellybeanjar.com will erase both.

6. Service providers

Cloudflare hosts the site and runs the activation service. As part of delivering any website, Cloudflare processes technical information such as IP addresses and request logs. That is standard infrastructure operation, and we do not use it to identify you.

Amazon is where our products are sold. Amazon handles the purchase, the payment, and the shipping, and Amazon's own privacy policy governs that transaction. As the seller, we see the limited order information Amazon provides us for fulfilling and supporting your order. Your purchase is not connected to your activation or to anything in your jar.

7. Age

The Jelly Bean Jar is sold to and intended for adults. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

8. Your control over your information

Because your data lives on your device rather than on our servers, you already hold every control that matters:

We cannot perform any of these on your behalf, because we have no copy to act on. If you are in a state with specific privacy rights, such as California, those rights apply to the limited information described in Section 2, and you can reach us at the address below to exercise them.

9. How long we keep things

Activation records are kept for as long as we operate the activation service, so that your code continues to work if you reinstall the app or move to a new phone. Aggregate activation counts are kept indefinitely. Your own data is kept by you, on your device, for as long as you keep it.

10. Security

The site and the activation service are served over encrypted connections. We keep the amount of information we hold deliberately small, which is the most effective protection we can offer you. The security of the data on your device depends on your device: a passcode on the app and a lock screen on the phone are both worth having.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the effective date at the top. If a change materially affects how information is handled, we will say so on this page rather than quietly revising it.
